California Marine Mammals

In this seminar we will cover the four different taxonomic groups of marine mammals; Cetaceans, pinnipeds, sirenians, and marine fissipeds. All very majestic and unique in their own way, it is no wonder why we're drawn to their allure. We will discuss different tools to help identify species within each group, cover their physiological traits, as well as their behavior in which we can observe during a dive or on the surface.

Lost at Sea - Crisis Prevention and Management Webinar

Nobody wants to get lost at sea, but things happen - conditions can change abruptly and accidents happen. People can get separated from their group and get carried away in the currents. Possibilities of man overboard and the boat sinking are always there. There are ways to avoid these things, and there are safety equipment and devices that can help you. In this seminar, we will discuss in detail the concept and practice of preventing getting lost at sea as well as dealing with such an emergency.

Colorful and Adorable (… OK, maybe Strange) Nudibranchs
There are currently over 3000 known species of nudibranchs in the world, and over 170 of them are found off the Pacific Coast (our backyard!). They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and they are found worldwide. This webinar series will be hosted by our resident slug-geek, Megumi Itoh, who has travelled far and wide in search of these colorful creatures.

Diving First Aid and Hazardous Marine Life Injuries Webinar

First aid knowledge incorporates more than just washing cuts and applying Band-Aids. Some common diving injuries can occur from hazardous marine life, decompression sickness, hypothermia, hypercapnia, barotrauma and much more. In order to prevent these injuries, we need to learn the elements of each, be aware of the symptoms that may arise, and how to treat ourselves or others in the case that injures occur. Not only should we know general first aid, but knowing diving first aid can make your dive safer and more fun.

Edible & Medicinal Seaweeds Webinar

When asked to name a food divers could harvest from the ocean, one might respond with calico bass, scallop, or lobster. We often overlook seaweeds as a readily available food source. But did you know that seaweeds have higher nutritional content than land vegetables? We will discuss the nutritional and medicinal values of marine algae, and introduce ways to enhance our meals with locally harvested seaweeds!
